This can reduce lag, and may prevent adoption as pets (so they remain slaughterable without tantruming owners). You can restrain creatures by assigning them to restraints, putting them in cages, or throwing them in pits or ponds. A colony of Muskoxen or some other peaceful animal can be used as a food source, by allowing them to breed, waiting for them to grow and then cutting down some of them in a Butchery. Tamed vermin and animals may be adopted as pets by the dwarves, and animals may also be slaughtered for food. Specifically, any vermin or creature with the flag requires a dungeon master. This is supposedly also true for other animals.ĭragons and other megabeasts may also be tamed, but this requires a Dungeon master. According to a forum post, a tamed tiger purchased from the elves will act as a guard, attacking hostile creatures.
Despite appearing tame, such a creature will go dwarf-killing as soon as it is released, with the added bonus of being immune to traps.Įlven merchants often sell caged animals, even some that can't normally be trained.
They will not attack your dwarves, and do not set off your traps.īeware, creatures that have killed dwarves (or other friendly creatures ) before being tamed are "un-tamable". A tame animal has the tag (Tame) after its name and is safe to be released into the fortress. I also isolate my pit/animal stockpile, and make the only exit lined with a couple cage traps.A dwarf with the animal training labor enabled can tame wild animals (including vermin) at a kennel. For this reason, I like to make sure I strip captured theives of their weapons immediately. Some side notes: Some craftier monsters (notably goblin thieves and skeletal creatures) will sometimes ESCAPE from your animal caretaker during transport. Select who you want thrown, and an animal caretaker will come toss them down with glee, to a delightful splat at the hard rock at the bottom, or glorp if you're using magma at the bottom. It works almost the exact same way as the Cage interface. This is where you tell your dwarves who you want thrown down the pit. Now comes the fun part! While still in the Zone menu, select your pit zone, and press P to bring up the "Set Pit/Pond information" menu. press i to bring up the zone menu, designate the open space of your pit, and once finished press p to mark it as a Pit/Pond. Your hauler dwarves will swarm the cage and strip the goblins of their possessions, and toss them in a nearby Garbage Dump zone which you can reclaim later. However, it will ALSO designate the CAGE for dumping, so open up the k menu, and UNdump the cake with d. This will designate everything on the goblins for dumping. The easiest way to do this is to designate a mass Dump with d->b->d right on the cage. Goblins have lots of giant cave spider silk loincloths and socks that traders go crazy for. Once your cage is filled with goblins, you will probably want to strip them of their gear before casting them into the pit (or in my case, magma). There is no limit on the number of creatures that can occupy a single cage. An animal caretaker will transport the prisoners to the single cage. Do this with the q menu, and press enter for each animal/prisoner you want to assign to the cage. Once the cage is in place, you will need to assign your doomed inmates to that cage. I also like to put my animal stockpile very close to this cage as well (again to cut down on travel time) If you want to, you can just throw them right down the pit. The holding cage is really just for ease of dumping items, which I'll go into later. It's my personal favorite way of dealing with goblin prisoners.Ĭonstruct a Cage with b -> j.
